Many central banks around the world have increased money supply over recent years through accomodative monetary policy and some through asset purchases. South Africa’s money supply has grown by over 25% over the last 3 years. This is similar to what has been observed in the UK, but lower than in the US, where it grew by over 50% (Japan saw growth of about 7 percent). As a ratio to GDP however, money supply has not risen as much as in these economies.
