South Africa’s real interest rate - Codera Analytics

South Africa’s real interest rate

While South Africa’s short term real interest rate remains negative, the long term rate is positive. A negative real short rate implies that monetary policy is currently having a stimulative impact on economic growth.  A high long term real interest rate reflects market expectations that nominal interest rates will normalise as the economy recovers following the COVID pandemic, uncertainty around future inflation, and an elevated sovereign credit risk premium.
